Zhao Wei, Zhou Xun and Zhang Ziyi featured in fashion mags

Three of our favorites were on the cover and in the lead editorial inside of three different magazines last month.

Marie Claire had Zhou Xun in feathers, sequins and leather topped with an angular bob:

Zhao Wei buys a vineyard in Bordeaux, joins an "Ancient Wine Brotherhood"

Vicki Zhao Wei spent a reported four million Euros for the 17 acre Chateau Monlot in the St Emilion region of Bordeaux. The French bourgeoisie have welcomed Chinese investment despite racist muttering from the Front National. According to one account the Chinese buyers are "wary and thorough, surround themselves with people they trust who speak excellent French, go through all the documents carefully" and most importantly, pay in cash.

Zhao Wei's new property includes well tended vineyards and lots of wine in barrels.

A few weeks ago she was inducted into the Jurade of Saint Emilion which seems to be a local Chamber of Commerce with fancy cloaks and hats. Founded in 1199, the Jurade now enforces quality standards and promotes the region's wine.

It was a lovely sunlit day in valley of the Gironde River in mid-September when the ceremony welcoming Zhao Wei and while she was probably to receive the honor (and to keep an eye on her four million Euro hillside) she looked as enthusiastic as Charlotte Corday awaiting her appointment with the guillotine.

Devil in a blue dress--Vicki Zhao Wei in Venice

Zhao Wei was one of the few Chinese actresses at the Venice International Film Festival this year and seemed to have a strange day while wearing a poorly chosen dress.

Things started out well enough with a spin around some canals--she skipped the hackneyed gondola for a more typical wooden inboard and looked relaxed and happy even though her train stayed on the dock while she climbed into the boat.
Everything remained sweetness and light while she strutted her stuff in the company of a dark-suited dandy that I didn't recognize.
Even stopping to pose like the little figures on the top of a wedding cake.
Suddenly the mood changed. Zhao Wei saw something very surprising--from her look she might be thinking anything from "Oh, no, we're late and they are starting without me" to "What the hell is she doing here".
She strode away looking ready for anything leaving her escort staring at the spot where she had just been.
Whatever it was that bothered her it led to a grim and unhappy looking actress facing the press on the red carpet.

Things seemed better later on when Zhao Wei posed with English actor Clive Owen after digging up a much more appropriate dress at the Jaeger-LeCoultre (they make expensive watches) gala dinner.

The Half-naked Actresses in Bath Scenes

Who could resist such a headline? Well, probably a lot of people but I am not one of them. This feature has been on the front page of Chinese Films as the "Editor's Weekly Pick" for about a month and I wanted to capture it for the diva-starved masses before it disappeared. They rounded up the usual suspects including Maggie Cheung and Joey Wong from "Green Snake" (above) and the recently released "Painted Skin 2" with Zhao Wei and Zhou Xun.

Several others made the editors' list. Huang Yi from "Happy Hotel".

Newcomer Zhang Zilin from "He Man".

Vicky Zhao Wei and Zhou Xun in "Painted Skin II"

Well, this should be a lot of fun. Painted Skin II/ Painted Skin: the Resurrection opens in China on next month. Call it what you will, from these stills there should be lines around the block. I thought that Painted Skin was a glorious mess; it made no sense and looked great. Much of the gang is back for the sequel including Vicky Zhao Wei and Zhou Xun, here shown bathing together.

Things won't stay all splish-splash and lovey-dovey though since Zhou Xun as Xiao Wei is a fox spirit and must be true to her nature--or at least undergo a transformation into a scary demon.
