Zhang Ziyi and Cecilia Cheung in “Dangerous Liaisons”

Setting Dangerous Liaisons in Shanghai during the 1930s and opening it out slightly to include glimpses of the social and political unrest of the time and place was an interesting and not altogether successful decision by its creators. One of the reasons that the 330 year old French novel remains such a rich source for cautionary tales of amorality, libertinage and emotional cruelty is the confined hothouse atmosphere the characters inhabit in Paris and in various chateaux. While Les Liaisons dangereuses was set seven short years before the storming of the Bastille, Choderlos de Laclos, its author, was secretary to Louis XVI’s cousin and hardly one to bring the Paris mob into his account of aristocratic licentiousness.

So making Du Fenyu the widow of a hero of the struggle against the Japanese and the warlords, including having her make an impassioned fundraising pitch at an haute-bourgeois party was a distraction—it also telegraphed to the audience that she would still be around when the closing credits rolled. Zhang Ziyi was excellent as Du Fenyu, gliding through most of the movie on a cloud of moral superiority while helping activists who were her husband’s students escape the police and rebuffing the advances of the cad Xie Yifan until she finally succumbs to him.

Zhang Ziyi as the too good to be true Du Fenyu

I feel that Jang Dong-Gun played Xie Yifan much too broadly with constant smirks and knowing leers as he stalked his prey, planning to seduce Du Fenyu to win a bet with the imperious and beautiful Mo Jieyu. Du Fenyu neither knows nor understands the level of his duplicity although he underlines his amoral behavior whenever given a chance.

One would not want to be on the wrong side of Mo Jieyu, perfectly portrayed by Cecilia Cheung. She is more than a match for any of the men around her is obviously the strongest although most repellent character onscreen. One hated Madame Mo while marveling at Cecilia Cheung’s pure talent and screen presence. In on short, memorable scene she essentially seduces the lingerie clad Beibei when convincing her to model for Dai, setting in motion her plan to use the innocent, convent raised Beibei to hit back at Beibei’s new fiancĂ©, a wealthy businessman formerly Madame Mo’s suitor.

Cecelia Cheung as the formidably evil Mo Jieyu

The opulent interiors and elegant costumes were very well designed and rendered as was the evocation of Shanghai in the late 1930s. There are a lot of notable parts to” Dangerous Liaisons” but they don’t really add up to a compelling film.

Dangerous Liaisons continues festival slog; Cecilia Cheung and Zhang Ziyi at BIFF

Dangerous Liaisons has hit high profile film festivals on three continents: first at Cannes, then Toronto and now (and perhaps finally) the Busan International Film Festival. It may actually open soon--September 27 is the date for the official premiere. The stars and director have waved to audiences, answered questions that they first heard a year ago and acted as if they, if not the best of friends, at least weren't sworn enemies. At least so far.

There was the usual: a red carpet appearance, a press conference or photo opportunity and a well staged question and answer session filtered through interpreters. Cecilia Cheung looked as if she was enjoying hitting the rope line. Busan takes security seriously, with big, fit-looking plainclothes officers ready to pounce on anyone getting too enthusiastic.

Cecilia Cheung stopped to shoot a picture and was undeterred by a few maniacal looking fans.

Zhang Ziyi was more reserved--she kept her distance even while pressing a bit of flesh and looked more like someone on a royal progression than an actress hyping a film.

She seemed much more comfortable onstage in a more scripted and controlled environment where she could relax.

Both actresses agreed that they were on the lookout for something exactly that long, with Cecilia lighthearted and mock-serious while Zhang Ziyi was sardonic and a bit arch about it:

Cecilia Cheung turns to wax while waiting for "Dangerous Liaisons" to open

The much anticipated and more than adequately hyped premier of "Dangerous Liaisons" is scheduled for September and the distributors are so bereft of ideas for publicity that they have released a set of stills that were initially sent to the press (and printed) several months ago. Here, for example.

They must be pretty happy with them but these images are good (or bad) examples of dodgy digital editing with the smooth/blur/soften tools set at infinity--unless Cecilia Cheung's skin has the texture of a Honda Civic dashboard.

Looks like there will opulent settings, costumes and even cars with the film in the Shanghai in the 1930s era which seems to be one of the safe times and places for Chinese films to look back upon nostalgically.

Cannes wrap-up; Cecilia Cheung and Gong Li splash across the red carpet

The rain started again on the normally sun kissed Mediterranean coast of France so the 65th Cannes Film Festival came to a soggy finish with umbrella holders getting as much camera time as the movie stars. Cecilia Cheung looked perfect and perfectly at ease even though she was dragging the soaked hem of her gown.

I should probably know the name of the guy with her (the one without the umbrella) so if anyone can ID him...

Gong Li also braved the elements wearing an outfit that, unless she is representing a sponsor such as Dior or Louis Vuitton, has become almost emblematic: Empire waist with a tightly cinched belt, very low cut front (here a deep V) with few accessories to distract from what people actually turn out to see.

Once she got inside, Gong Li presented the best actor award to Danish heart-throb Mads Mikkelsen for his role in The Hunt.

Even more Cecilia Cheung from Cannes

Cecilia Cheung was busy promoting Dangerous Liaisons at parties and other appearances in Cannes over the past couple of days. She chatted the paparazzi covering the premiere of Korean entry The Taste of Money, posed with Dangerous Liaisons director Heo Jin-ho and gave some fans a thrill by having her picture taken with them. Nice white dress with spaghetti straps and a lot of embroidered detail.

Later she lit up the party given by the luxury jeweler di Grisogono wearing a simply cut strapless gown cut perfectly on the bias from a lovely pattern of white and pink, accessorized, one assumes with a necklace and ring provided by her host. Xinhua pointed out that she was the only Asian actress invited to the party which could be a reflection on the party, any other Asian actresses in town or Cecilia herself. Whatever the case, she did her job and looked great.

The filthy weather had finally cleared so there was the de rigueur waterfront photoshoot.

Not to be missed was the interview with Sina while holding their logo.

Cecilia Cheung celebrates her birthday in Cannes; Xinhua goes crazy

It was Cecilia Cheung's 32nd birthday and she celebrated with a big cake while in Cannes hyping her film Dangerous Liaisons which premiered there. She looked just fine as herself, especially in the outlandish tapestry boots but Chinese news portal Xinhua made themselves look ridiculous by claiming that she looked like the Cannes 2012 logo of Marilyn Monroe blowing out a candle on a cake and then not running a picture that showed what they reported.

Meanwhile back at the festival, Dangerous Liaisons unspooled to a packed house. Cecilia spoke briefly to the audience in French and settled down to watch the movie, very possibly seeing it for the first time after editing and with the music and sound added.
