Faye Wong sang "Heart Sutra" and "Chu Zhang" at the Hong Kong celebration of one of the most important events on the Buddhist calendar--the birth of the first Karmapa, Dusum Khyenpa. He was initial Tibetan reincarnated spiritual leader (1110-1193) and started the unique tradition of reincarnation in Tibetan Buddhism. Brigitte Lin along with lovebirds Tony Leung and Carina Lau were in the crowd. Buddhists in Hong Kong

ReplyDeleteA bit of Brigitte Lin trivia: in "Police Story"'s end montage, Brigitte can be seen making the sign of the cross before attempting a stunt. This gave rise to assumptions that she's Christian.
In Akiko Tetsuya's "The Last Star of the East", Brigitte disclosed that Jackie told her to make the sign of the cross as it would look good for the cameras... and I think it's actually safe to state that Brigitte's been a life-long Buddhist.
Christian iconography in Hong Kong movies has always seemed a bit strange even when the audience knows the source, as in many of Wong Kar-Wai's films. Much of the religious imagery in movies is done, like in the "Police Story" montage case, because it looks good on camera. Buddhism fares even worse, of course--martial arts movies have enough evil abbots running corrupt monasteries to start their own religious order.
